Purpose : To investigate effective PHMB concentration for the contact lens care solution we compared the antimicrobial activity of pure polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) and PHMB contained in multipurpose solution against International Organization for Standardization (ISO) required microbes.
Methods : Activated for 24 hours in culture media Staphylococcus aureus (SA), Methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), Serratia marcescens (SM), Candida albicans (CA) and Fusarium solani (FS) were cultured for 12 hours in the media containing PHMB and multipurpose solution contained 0.0000125%~0.0004% of PHMB respectively using 96-well plate. Optical density of the culture media was measured at 600nm to compare the antibiotic and antifungal effects.
Results : The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC), suppressing the growth and development, of pure PHMB were twice as high as that of PHMB contained in multipurpose solution against SA and MRSA, PA, SM and CA. The PHMB concentration of 0.0002% was shown effective antimicrobial activities against ISO required microbes.
Conclusion : The MICs of PHMB in multipurpose solution against ISO established microbes were lower than those of pure PHMB because of synergistic antimicrobial effect.
